Welcome to Offutt Air Force Base, home of the 55th Wing (the Fightin’ Fifty-Fifth), and a variety of tenant units, including U.S. Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM), the Air Force Weather Agency (AFWA) and the Heartland of America Band. 

 

Offutt’s diverse missions and global responsibilities put it on the cutting edge of the Air Force’s transformation. Each branch of the US military is represented among the approximately 10,000 military and federal employees assigned here.  Offutt is a beautiful community situated near the Missouri River in the rolling hills of southeastern Nebraska.

History

                

The Strategic Air and Space Museum traces the history of the Strategic Air Command with military memorabilia and rare photographs and film footage.  Aircraft and missile exhibits are on the grounds.  The museum is located at exit 426 off I-80; for more information call 1-800-358-5029;

The General Crook House is the authentically restored quarters of General George Crook at historic Fort Omaha.  General George Crook was a Civil War & National Indian Wars hero.  The house features period furnishings, archives, documented wallpaper, and a Victorian Garden.  Located at 30th and Fort Streets; call (402) 455-9990; http://omahahistory.org/museum.htm

Arts

You will find a multitude of things to do on base - Fourth of July fireworks at the base lake, including boating and picnic facilities.  The Offutt Open House Air Show - performances by the Heartland of America Band - and the list goes on! Housing

Officer and Enlisted Housing Area - Rising View is located two miles west of Offutt AFB and offers a variety of housing styles for junior NCOs, senior NCOs, company grade officers,  field grade officers and senior officers. The majority of the community consists of two-story duplex homes with a two-car garage. Other home styles vary and may include single-level duplex homes with a single-car garage. Each newly constructed and/or renovated home is equipped with a stove, refrigerator, garbage disposal, dishwasher, microwave and central air conditioning.

Bellevue Public Schools - is the fourth largest school district in Nebraska. Serving 9,800 students in the Bellevue/Offutt community, BPS has 15 elementary schools, 3 middle schools and 2 senior high schools.  The average class size in grades K-3 is 20, and 22.6 in grades 4-6. Students must be five years of age by October 15 to enroll in kindergarten.

 

Secondary schools include college prep and vocational classes, award winning special education and high ability learner (gifted) programs.  Each year their students bring home metro, state and national awards in such diverse fields as music, JROTC, English, auto mechanics and athletics. The average class size in grades 7-12 is 22.8.

Papillion-LaVista Schools - serve the Papillion, LaVista and Offutt community, just minutes from the base.  PLSD has 2 high schools, 1 alternative school, two junior high schools and 14 elementary schools serving 9,400 students. One of the largest school districts in the state, their focus is “Excellence … one student at a time.”

 

PLSD offers Early Childhood services, an English Language Learner Program (for students whose first language is not English), high ability learner programs and special education programs. Their secondary schools offer award winning programs in band, athletics, college prep, vocational and a Naval JROTC program among many others.

“Right Start” is the mandatory in-processing briefing for all military and DoD civilian personnel new to the base. At Offutt AFB the “Right Start Briefing” is held the first Wednesday of each month at the Patriot Club from 0730 to 1130 hours.

 

Included in the briefing is a relocation/information fair to address the individual needs of the newcomer; base services available, points of interest for family members, job information for spouses and much more!
